Learn to Make Batik - Engage Tutorial for Kids

Hey Kids!

We want to invite you to create a piece of Thai artwork with us!

Batik is a textile art form that traditionally uses hot wax to draw designs onto fabric. The wax acts as a resist, and when the fabric is dyed, the wax will keep the fabric the original color, creating beautiful patterns or pictures in the fabric.

This artform originated in Indonesia and has spread to many other countries including Thailand.

Today, I’m going to walk you through the steps of creating your own batik artwork using simple and safe materials you may already have around your home. You will need:

A large piece of scrap cardboard (about 12x12 inches)
White cotton fabric (about 10x10 inches)
A pencil
White school glue
Acrylic paint
Water
A Paintbrush
A palette for the paint
A large bowl
